GWL Voices strongly condemns the Russian military invasion of Ukraine. It is a breach of international law, the treaty-based global order, and the sovereignty of an independent country.

This unilateral action has serious implications for the security of Ukraine, Europe, and the wider world. This will undoubtedly cause many deaths and much human suffering for whom war was never their choice specially for women and children .

The risk of escalation of this conflict is high, and it could create a massive humanitarian crisis, adding to those already challenging the international community’s capacity to respond. We also believe that this military action is not in the interests of Russia’s people.

This outbreak of conflict in Europe reminds us of some of the worst moments of the twentieth century on the continent. That experience led humankind to create an architecture and a system to avoid the occurrence of situations like the one we are facing with the attack on Ukraine. The UN Charter clearly states that “All Members shall refrain in their international relations from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state, or in any other manner inconsistent with the Purposes of the United Nations.”

We unite our voices and call on President Putin to halt his military offensive and bring the troops back to Russia.

We also ask the international community to act swiftly through all legal tools and means to stop further bloodshed and find a diplomatic path forward.

We at GWL Voices believe that there is no other way to solve differences, no matter how deep they are, than diplomacy at a negotiating table.
